This story hit America’s Most Wanted, which means that Fox News had it too. The Boston Herald has had a lot of coverage, including several stories in today’s paper. Cops: Clark Rockefeller mystery ‘just begun’
BALTIMORE – As the man who calls himself Clark Rockefeller sits in a jail cell, his plan to add a new identity and start another new life thwarted, authorities said yesterday they still don’t know who he really is, but they intend to find out.
“Determining his identity is a top priority,” Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said yesterday afternoon. “We’ve put names to men who’ve burned their fingerprints off to elude identification. This suspect will be no different.”
The short story is that this guy got divorced from his wife and to avoid revealing his true name gave up custody of his young daughter. Last week while on a “supervised” visitation with said daughter he abducted her with the help of an unwitting, or maybe just witless, accomplice. Who was promptly caught and sang like the proverbial canary. Which didn’t seem to help too much since he lied to her too.
He was caught in Baltimore this past weekend and is being fast tracked for rendition to Massachusetts. Where he will sit in durance vile until the district attorney, police, and courts figure out who he really is. If it were me, I’d just put him in the general population and start the rumor that he was a child molester, but that’s just me. I’m not generally acclaimed for my subtlety. I’m sure their more traditional techniques will work, eventually. It will be interesting to see who he really is, how many aliases he has and how many jurisdictions want to have a chat or ten with him.
Is it just me, or does anyone else see a fine irony in the fact that his address in Baltimore was on Ploy Street? Speaking of which, he bought the place several months ago and was getting it ready for occupancy with his daughter. Which tells me that he hatched this plan back a while ago.
Anyway, this is a story that the writers on the Man Bashing Channel Lifetime couldn’t come up with on their best day.
This is going to be a very entertaining case.
Cool!
This case is nuts! I heard on the news wires this morning that he’s now claiming amnesia and he can’t remember all his past aliases an lies. Also his lawyer is a peice of work. He’s mumbling all about how “You can’t kidnap your own daughter”.Still a little creepy that they still don’t know what his real name is…and “Clark Rockerfeller” isn’t it….
He gave up custody, so he certainly can kidnap his own daughter. Mass. Gen. LawCh. 265 § 26A.Custodial interference by relatives. As long as a court order has been issued granting custody to one parent. If the non custodial parent takes the child out of state, it’s a Five Year Felony. I’m not a lawyer, but I can certainly read a statute. The only question would be if a court order has been issued. Which it would appears it has.
