The State Of Public Education

8

Mrs. TOTWTYTR came home from school today and told me that one of the other teachers had been called to an “emergency” meeting with one of the administrators. Seems the other teacher had chastised one of her students for talking like a “dirty pig”. Which meant that he was swearing in class, although I don’t know if said swears were directed at the teacher or just general conversation.

The teacher brought a union representative with her, just in case. Which turned out to be a good thing. Seems the student had complained to his mother who called the school and complained that his feelings were hurt and his self esteem harmed.

The union representative advised the teacher that the best course of action was an apology. From the teacher to the student, not the other way around. Seems that the “proper” way for the teacher to handle this was to send a note to the school office and request that one of the assistant principals come down to the room to speak with the student. If that didn’t work, the student could be given a detention.

Oh, the student is classified as “special needs” for behavioral problems and so is a protected class of person.

Ambulance Driver has named this particular type of disorder “Chronic Hickory Deficiency”. Unfortunately the lad’s Mom didn’t apply the treatment when he was younger and the teachers can’t do it now. So, he’ll just turn into one of society’s problem children. No discipline in school or at home now, he’ll probably end up making license plates for the state before too long.

Doomed. We’re doomed I tell you.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. Seems that the "proper" way for the teacher to handle this was to send a note to the school office and request that one of the assistant principals come down to the room to speak with the student.… You are kidding me? A kid is swearing in class, so the teacher has to interrupt the learning of some other kid so that they can take a note to the office etc etc etc **shakes head** … not sure I can complete the next sentance without swearing either!

  2. I wish I were kidding, but I'm not. The Mrs. has one class where she spends more time dealing with behavioral/discipline issues than she does teaching. Last year another teacher ended up buying a kid a new camera to replace the one that she confiscated. Actually, she was a substitute and was told that she wouldn't be called any longer if she didn't. She did, then they didn't call her again anyway. Spineless administrators are the real problem. If I were a teacher, I'd be blogging from inside prison. I wouldn't last a week.

  3. The kid now knows he can insult any teacher at any time and get away with it.It will go on as long as people go along with it. The proper response to any request of that kind is "No". Let them fire you for not apologizing to students when they insult you, and then sue them for creating a hostile work environment and firing you.The problem with this though is that your job will be on the line, so it's a tough call to make. But until enough people make it, these things will just get worse and worse.

  4. ARGHHHHH! THIS is why I never have and never will use my degree… I would be walking out the door before I apologized to some little s**tbird…

  5. There is a little boy in Miss Linda's kindergarten class who is a constant source of trouble. He's apparently punched and bitten the teacher, run outside, etc. All of this on a regular basis. Linda told me one day that all the kids had to sit blocking the doors of the classroom to keep him in it. What learning was going on then? (He also tried to convince her to cut music class with him. In kindergarten!)According to the mother of one of the other students in the class, the boy really ought to be in a special education class, but his parents refuse to allow it and insist there's nothing wrong with him. So the other kids get to suffer.

  6. There should be a balance between parental rights and the interests of the school system. I have friends who have an incredibly bright kid who is about ten. A couple of years ago they decided they had to put him on Ritalin, but only when school was in session. They didn't like the idea, but he was disruptive in class. I think with kids like that, and I know with my now grown son, that part of the problem is that they get bored in school. School is just not challenging enough for them. Which is a whole other ball of wax.

  7. my hubby teaches in a big city school and last spring, the administration they had at the time allowed the students "to preserve their cultural freedom" by swearing, and anything else they could come up with in the classroom even though it would disrupt others learning. Hubby came home and was about to hand in his resignation because by "allowing" this kind of attitude it progresses into a much more harmful behavior. Luckily for hubby a new administration came in and stopped the "cultural" freedom crap. There's a difference between freedom and meanness! and I have always agreed with you and AD- it stems from Chronic Hickory Deficiency, something which both mine and hubby's parent's had no problem dishing out if they needed too! And after doing clinicals in both the ER and on the truck- you can tell which parents apply the hickory switch and which don't and sadly the one's that don't are winning! UGH!
