Mom sues after birth control shot turned out to be flu shot

A Seattle woman has filed a controversial “wrongful life” lawsuit over a federally funded health clinic’s alleged negligence. Yesenia Pacheco was receiving a birth control injection, Depo-Provera, every three months, but became pregnant in September 2011 when NeighborCare Health employees erroneously gave her a flu shot instead, reports KIRO-TV.

Oooooh, someone is in trouble. Or was, since they happend a few years ago. One of the basic tenets of medicine is to be 100% sure that you are giving the right medications.

When Pacheco came in for her next shot, she was informed of the error, and told that she was two and a half months pregnant. She says the clinic staff offered her a free abortion, but that was not an option due to her beliefs.

Offering an abortion was probably meant to help, but most likely was offensive to MS Pachecco. I wonder what the conversation was like?

NeighborCare Health CEO and Executive Director Mark Secord states they will “learn from this situation” and feels “great empathy” for Pacheco.

At the least they will learn how much this is going to cost them. I have no doubt that there has already been one round of retraining in the “Six Rights of Medication Administration” and there will probably be more.

Notes KIRO: “Pacheco did not get the flu.”

At least Mr. Secord didn’t use THAT as a defense.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.
