Or maybe it’s not a trend, but mere coincidence.

Police: Chicago hospital patient stole ambulance, crashed in Wisconsin

Police say they have arrested a Chicago hospital patient who stole an ambulance and crashed it north of Milwaukee.

Michael Buckner, 23, of Chicago was being taken to another facility when he stole the ambulance, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office. He crashed the ambulance shortly before 7 a.m. Monday on Interstate 43 near Port Washington, the office said.

He made it over 100 miles away from Chicago before he cracked up the ambulance. That was after he attacked two deputies guarding him, stole the ambulance, crashed the ambulance, and then stole another vehicle.

All of which could have been avoided if someone had just locked their ambulance or at least taken the key out of the ignition.

Just do a quick internet search for “ambulance stolen” and you’ll find all sorts of interesting stories.

Man high on drugs crashes stolen ambulance, masturbates in police station

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A Colorado State University student is facing several charges after he allegedly stole an ambulance and attacked deputies after being taken into custody, according to KMGH.

Stefan Sortland, 18, is charged with aggravated vehicle theft, obstructing EMS, reckless driving, hit-and-run, criminal mischief, attempted motor vehicle theft, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and assault.

At least part of this fiasco could have been avoided by not leaving the ambulance running with the keys inside. Or having an anti theft switch activated. That’s assuming they had one installed.

There is plenty of dumbness to go around here.

LOCK YOUR AMBULANCE.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.
