The Risks Of The Job

1

Every job has it’s risk, some more than others. Fire Fighting is generally considered a dangerous job, but the statistics don’t bear that out.

Then this happens,

Out-of-control Arizona wildfire kills 19 firefighters, including nearly all of elite Hotshot crew

18 of these fire fighters were members of the Prescott, AZ Fire Department Prescott Granite Mountain Hotshots wild fire team.

Prescott FD has 92 career fire fighters and 18 of them died in this fire. That’s 20% of the fire department gone in an instant.

While I’ve often been critical of the fire service involvement in EMS, I have no end of admiration for their fire fighting ability.

My thoughts go out to both families of the dead fire fighters. The family that the work with and the families that they will no longer be going home to.

Rest in Peace.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. These folks were truly the best of the best. And they did their best, but in this case it wasn’t enough. Thoughts and prayers for all those families…
