Tawana Brawley served with court order to pay man she accused of rape in 1987
Sort of ancient history. The short story being a teenage black woman accused some white men of rape. Falsely as it turned out.
Among the bad things that happened is that the Reverend Al Sharpton became a “civil rights leader”. Which doesn’t say anything particularly good about the civil rights movement or the media for that matter.
One of the people harmed by the accusation filed a law suite against Brawley and won a judgement. Then she skipped town and was no where to be found until the New York Post tracked her down in Virginia.
This is the “Huh?” part.
“If she is not going to tell the truth, then it is about the money. That is the only way to hold her accountable,” said Pagones, who is now principal owner of a private investigations firm.
He owns a private investigation firm and his people couldn’t find Brawley?
Isn’t that what private investigators do?
It just seems odd to me.
Besides I haven’t had anything else to blog about lately.
Hopefully I’ll get back on track soon. My life has changed (for the better) in a major way and the path my blogging might take is still unclear to me.
Interesting that she was ‘unable’ to be located… The media sure knew where she was!!!
My first thought is that the guy owed the money tipped of the paper and then used their “find” to sue for his money. That way he can’t be accused of hounding the poor girl.
Maybe, but if she legitimately owes the money and skipped town, searching for her isn’t really hounding.
What I don’t understand is the use of a “private investigation firm”. They have no access to intelligence outside what publicly available, so I would assume this firm would be no better at finding her than you or I. Perhaps I am missing something.
Private investigators, and just about anyone else who wants to spend the money, can buy access to a ton of on line data. I used to have a friend who could out just about anything about just about anyone if he was given just a few pieces of basic information. He was a computer geek, not a cop or an investigator. He just knew how to get around the World Wide Web and access on line databases. He used his information for good purposes to find on line sexual predators, but if someone asked him he probably could have found MS Brawley as well.
When my daughter worked as a paralegal, she had similar access. The limits of what she could find were set by her employer, not the technology.
Computer security experts will tell you that really is no privacy on the Internet any longer.
