It’s Easy To Be Tough

6

It’s easy to be tough when you think that you’re the only person with a gun. Or two of you have guns. And decided to rob a store run by a little old white haired lady.

It’s not so easy to be tough when it turns out the lady has a gun and the will to use it.

If it wasn’t so serious it would be funny. Only it’s not funny because who knows what would have happened if the store owner didn’t have that firearm?

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. …um, I’ll guess; the guys would have got enough of what they wanted to do a hit and run and that would have been the end of it.

The only one with the weapon AND the will to use it was the gray-haired lady.

They had the weapons. Had they the will, that gray-haired lady and God knows who else would be toast. They wouldn’t have run like children.

Let’s not forget, that dear lady shot out into the store first, and from what I heard it was not with knowledge of where her customers were at the moment of her firing. You’re assuming she was the only sane one there. Just because they ran doesn’t mean she made a good choice.

You keep looking for definitive instances that justify being armed. In any case you cite, fate could turn in either direction.

    • You seem to be making a lot of assumptions based on facts not in evidence.

First, you assume that the bad guys would be better shots than the owner. Do you know how frequently she practices? Do you know if she’s ever been in this type of situation before. She had only one customer in the store and from what I saw he took off somewhere not in camera view. Which doesn’t mean that she didn’t know where everyone was. She certainly knew where the bad guys were.

She certainly made the best choice, which was to defend her employees and a customer (as well as herself) from people who had guns and might have meant them harm. There are countless instances of unarmed people “giving the robber what they want” and being murdered for their cooperation. I’ve testified in some of those cases, so I have a pretty good idea of what can happen.

I don’t have to look for instances to justify being armed. There is a specific part of the Bill of Rights that covers that.

  2. This is the video of the day/week/month. Those guys look like a three stooges movie running into that door.

The five stooges decided they really needed to be somewhere else.

  3. The cop “obviously” doesn’t recommend that ALL business owners being robbed at gunpoint react this way, mind. 🙂

The first rule of a gunfight is to have a gun. You may decide it is not the best decision to use it, but you need a gun to MAKE that decision.
