Reclaiming the streets: Sikhs defend their temple and locals protect their pubs as ordinary Britons defy the rioters

Some armed with swords, some carrying hockey sticks, defiant Sikhs stood guard outside their temples last night.

More then 700 men, some in their 80s, took to the streets to protect the homes, businesses and places of worship in Southall, West London.

The residents rallied together in a show of unity against looters echoed in other parts of the country as ordinary Britons attempted to reclaim the streets.

First of all, good for them. Like the Korean shop owners during the LA riots in 1992, these men took the responsibility of protecting themselves, their families, their houses of worship, and their shops because the police couldn’t or more likely wouldn’t. My guess is that the people who are the bosses of the police bosses (in other words political hacks) told the police to let the rioters wear themselves out because insurance would pay for the property losses. Can’t have the media upset that the police might hurt some of the poor little rioters while they were looting stores.
And now on to ADC Kavanagh.

However, Met Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Steve Kavanagh told Sky News: ‘What I don’t need is these so-called vigilantes, who appeared to have been drinking too much and taking policing resources away from what they should have been doing – which is preventing the looting.

Here is the definition of Vigilante,

One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one’s own hands.

Defending yourself is not being a vigilante, pursuing criminals and bringing them to “justice” is. Which is not what these men are doing.

So, they are not vigilantes, they are concerned citizens protecting themselves… as noted above.

Sikhs are forbidden to drink. So, it’s unlikely that they have been drinking too much, or at all.

So, in one sentence, 32 or so words, ADC Steve Kavanagh has maligned the Sikhs by calling them vigilantes and insulted their religion. Good thing for him they aren’t Muslims, because he’d be fired by now.

So, here’s my advice to Kavanagh. Shut up until you know what you are talking about. Oh, and maybe you can stop your police from harassing the Sikhs and others who are defending their families, businesses, and houses of worship.

Here’s the best quote from the article. At least in my opinion.

Amarjit Singh Klair from nearby Hounslow, who helped rally the men, said: ‘We are working along side the police, they’re doing what they can but they are stretched.

‘Why shouldn’t we defend our homes, businesses and places of worship? This is our area. There’s lots of talk about it kicking off here. But we’re ready for them.

Why indeed. Britain needs more, not less, of this.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

    • Apparently in a different area a group of Turks and Kurds banded together to do the same thing. There was some guy on Fox News who was saying that citizens shouldn’t do this sort of thing, but leave it to the police. Sadly, it appears that the police in Britain are either incapable or not interested.

    • This is true, but as I was told many years ago, that’s where organization and command presence come into play.

        • And of course like politicians everywhere, they are going to cut the public safety people first so they can keep people on the dole and lots of REMFs in the offices.
