I never thought of him as a country singer because I only knew of him from his cross over hits.
This was his first hit, produced in 1959

The title was ironically prophetic because shortly after this hit he was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to prison for possession of two joints. He served three years in Angola prison farm in Angola, LA before being pardoned by musician/Governor Jimmie Davis.
His next major hit came in 1974 with “Before the Next Teardrop Falls”. It hit #1 on the Billboard Pop and Country charts.

Freddy has a bunch of great songs. I was forced to listen to them growing up when my dad would play them over and over. Now I have them on my Ipod and sing along knowing all the words. Love this stuff, keeping these singers and songs alive. There’s only so much Black Eyed Peas I can take.

FIRST.
Good ones, and I remember BOTH of these 🙂
He used to come to the VFW in Port Aransas, TX for some quick songs back in the 90’s.
he’d either get on the stage or do them ackopellaby himself.
Thank you Google and Firefox because I have NO idea how to spell acapella—-and your hints SUCK.
And not tpmention that ugly hack against the ‘slash tag’…whateveeeerrrrrr.
