From yesterday’s Boston Globe,

Bush program helped lay the groundwork in Egypt

WASHINGTON — A small, controversial effort launched under President George W. Bush to fund and train election monitors in Egypt played a key role in the movement to topple President Hosni Mubarak’s regime.

The program, which provided millions in direct funding to prodemocracy groups, helped dispatch 13,000 volunteers to observe Egypt’s parliamentary elections in December. Thousands of those monitors, angered by what they said was blatant election rigging, joined the protests. Some became outspoken leaders; others used the networking and communication skills they learned to help coordinate 18 days of rallies.

For those of you who don’t know, the Boston Globe is one of the most liberal papers in the country. I don’t think they had anything good to say about President G.W. Bush before, during, or after his two terms in office. Not only that, but they say something nice about Elizabeth Cheney. I’d put in a comment about it being April 1, but the truth is that they give President Bush a lot of credit for his efforts at promoting democracy in the Middle East.

They even mention that President Obama cut funding for the program, although they quote a spokesman as blaming the budget crisis (e.g. Bush) for the cutbacks and citing the fact that the Administration sent more money to none government entities than did Pres. Bush.

Either way, it’s an astonishing article for the Boston Globe to publish. They deserve credit for running this article, as much as it might have hurt them.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.
