For some reason he gets no air play on Sirius/XM radio. I don’t know if there are contractual issues or if the people that run Willies Place and The Roadhouse don’t consider him a Country Western singer. I know most of his hits were on the Contemporary charts, but he had some hits on the CW charts too.

Orbison certainly had enough Country Western influences in his early life, so I’m a bit bewildered. Anyway here are a couple of earlier Orbison hits, country or not.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. He was from the days before such rigid market segmentation. What kind of music did he perform? Great music.

  2. He was NOT a favorite of Willies, I think he turned Nelson down on a couple of songs he wrote… And yes he was GOOD!

  3. BP, his music is great, no matter the genre. Considering that Bob Wills, Johnny Cash, and especially Left Frizzel were influences, he could fit in any sub genre of CW. If I were going to classify him, it would be early Nashville Sound. Old NFO, somehow I'm not surprised. Since Willie's Place has turned into Willie's Channel, the variety of music has suffered. As has the quality. I'll do a rant about that in the near future, it's been building up steam every time I turn on the car radio.
