Not So Random Faron Young

2

We found out this week that one of the smaller emergency departments in the area is closing. The hospital merged with a bigger one several years back and the plan was to merge the two hospital’s emergency rooms into one, but the plan had sat on the back burner for more than ten years. The hospital corporation is in the red and suddenly this became a priority so plans were made to move everything into one facility. Except the nurses. None of them will be laid off but because the nurses are in two different unions depending on which “campus” they work at there are pay, benefit, and seniority discrepancies the nurses at the closing emergency department have opted to move to other areas of the same hospital. It makes sense financially, and probably even clinically, but it’s still sad since as a group this was one of the nicer bunches of nurses we deal with.

I was commiserating with one of the nurses who told us that we’d miss them. I replied that I miss them already and they’re not even gone. He laughed and I told him that was the title of a huge country music hit from the 1950s. He laughed again, because he thought I was kidding. Obviously, he’s not a Faron Young fan. So, by the miracle of Al Bores Intrawebz I found the lyrics and printed them out for him.

All of this of course started me thinking, so I went to Youtube and found a recording of the song. From 1956, charted as high as #5, Faron Young sings “I Miss You Already (And You’re Not Even Gone)

And of course what would a Random Country Music post be without a bonus song? Also from 1956 “Sweet Dreams”, charted as high as #2.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. Thanks, as always, for remembering Faron Young and his great music. I interviewed Marvin Rainwater for "Live Fast, Love Hard: The Faron Young Story," and he told me about writing "I Miss You Already…"

  2. Thanks for stopping by Diane. If you look around the blog, you'll see a couple of Random Marty Robbins posts as well. I'm a big Marty Robbins fan.
