Some Days, It’s Worth It

4

I received an email from my services equivalent of police internal affairs. That’s generally not a good thing, usually it’s a complaint of some sort. This, however was a pleasant surprise. A patient had written thank you notes to the four of our who responded to her call for assistance back in mid December. She included small gifts for each of us with the notes. Just a token of her appreciation for fast response, compassion, and good treatment.

To me, this was just one of thousands of calls I’ve done over the years, but to her it was a life changing (and possibly life saving) major event. Human nature being what it is, it’s rare that we receive something like this. People tend to complain far more easily than they compliment.

It’s nice to have a reminder that some people do appreciate what we do.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. Got a letter like that once from the family of a patient, which was not only just a nice gesture, but told us that the patient had in fect survived when we thought s/he had died. Appreciation and call feedback in one!
