The other day I was listening to “Willie’s Place” on SiriusXM radio and heard a very nice cover of “Night Life”, composed by Willie Nelson. It’s been recorded by Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Ray Price, and a zillion other singers. This version, however, was song by, uh, Leon Russell. Yeah, that Leon Russell, the one whose voice I once said makes Ernest Tubb sound like Jim Reeves. This song just fit his voice and the arrangement very well. I liked it, I really liked it.
My thought was that, as I’ve been known to say, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.
This morning driving home from work I heard a very nice cover of “Sweet Dreams Of You” composed by Don Gibbs, sung by Faron Young, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, and, gulp, Leon Russell.
Yeah, that’s two good songs by Leon Russell. Now I’m faced with the prospect that there are more.
Here, for your dining and dancing pleasure, is Don Gibson singing his song.
No Leon Russell cover on Youtube, so here is Patsy Cline’s cover.
That’s probably the most famous, with Faron Young’s a close second. Russell’s isn’t third, or even fourth, but it’s credible none the less.
Nice.
