Surprise, Surprise, Surprise

The most liberal Senator in the US Senate runs for President of the United States. During his campaign he pledges a litany of leftist liberal programs that would radically restructure the US financial, energy, automobile manufacturing, and health care industries. He also says that he wants to “Spread the wealth around” in an exchange with a voter. Rich and famous people in finance, venture capital, and Hollywood fall all over themselves to support him in every way possible.

Leftist candidate wins the election over a “Grumpy old guy” who would continue the warring ways of the US and appears to be weak on the economy.

Now, to the shock and utter dismay of his wealthy supporters, they find out that he meant every word of it. Indeed, the guy who said he was a different kind of politician is in fact a different kind of politician. One who keeps his campaign promises, at least when it comes to domestic policy. It’s not politics as usual, because he wants the government to heavily regulate the auto and finance industries, take control of health care, or at least how it’s paid for, and raise everyone’s taxes. Well, except for those who DON’T pay taxes. Paradoxically, they will receive a credit for not paying the taxes that they don’t owe.

A top Obama fundraiser and hedge fund manager said: “I’m appalled at the anti-Wall Street rhetoric. It was OK on the campaign but now it’s the real world. I’m surprised that Obama is turning out to be so left-wing. He’s a real class warrior.”

Bummer dude. The guy is doing exactly what he told you he was going to do. Only you and your Wall Street buddies cynically thought that it was just a come on for the rubes on the left and once in he’d continue with business as usual. Jokes on you, I guess.

Among those affected by such changes would be some of Mr Obama’s most powerful supporters in the election, such as Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO, and other “Silicon Valley” executives whose profits are mostly made abroad. They were taken aback when the President blasting companies for “shirking” their responsibilities by avoiding tax.

Taken aback? The guy has a history of leftist redistributionist rhetoric. I know, you thought it was just politics as usual too, didn’t you? Just as people have always deluded themselves that politicians really couldn’t mean what they said until they found out that they really did.

Some people still do support the President’s plan,

A senior Wall Street executive who remains an admirer of Mr Obama, told The Sunday Telegraph that the reforms were necessary after years of excess. “I think its refreshing that he has the chutzpah to deal with the previously untouchable abuses of the system like tax dodging and excessive executive pay,” he said.

“We badly need some European style social democracy, and Obama might as well start with health care reform.”

Only it looks like he’s starting with the financial system, not health care. I wonder what this executives position will be when Obama imposes a 60% tax rate on his salary? It’s OK for AIG executives to be taxed at 90%, but what about when it’s you? Well, not that the AIG executives ever will be taxed at so high a rate, but that’s beside the point. Oh, and don’t forget that relieving employers of the burden of also being health care financers will increase their bottom line. For a while at least.

Read the entire article and I think you’ll see what I’ve tagged this Politics and Sumdoap Chronicles. Sumdood would have told them to be wary of politicians who do what they promised during the campaign.

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. Not sure why, but this reminds me of John Kerry (“I voted for it before I voted against it”) – people were so SURE that GWB didn’t mean what he said. That’s why we had 5 years of “Bush lied” – they couldn’t stand that they’d out-thought themselves.

  2. This time they are getting hit in the pocket book and they don’t like it… Agree with the rubes comment too- except they got played along with everyone else!

  3. Well NOT everyone! 🙂 Some of we older, cranky, crusty, some would say cynical people saw the con for what it was. As a nation, it appears we elected a Three Card Monty artist as President.
