Answer. They all covered this song,
I’ll Sail My Ship Alone
Well, we’ve been sweethearts for so long
Now you say we’re through
The love we shared is now a memory
I had built a ship of dreams
And planned them all for you
But now I guess what is to be will be.
I gave a message to the wind to take home
On to you hoping you would hear my S.O.S.
I thought that you would come back home my darling
Of you knew how much my aching heart was in distress.
Well, I’ll sail my ship alone
With all the dreams I own
Drifting out across the ocean blue
Yes, I’ll sail my ship alone
Though all the sails you torn
And when it starts to sink then I’ll blame you.
Now, I’m just like a ship at sea that’s lost without a sail
The dark clouds hide the sun from up above
And even with these broken dreams my heart will never fail
But deep inside there’s only one true love.
Yes, I’ll sail my ship alone
With all the dreams I own
Drifting out across the ocean blue
Yes, I’ll sail my ship alone
Though all the sails you torn
And when it starts to sink then I’ll blame you…
By Aubrey Wilson “Moon” Mullican.
How many of you have even heard of “Moon” Mullican. Yeah, me neither until I heard this on XM a couple of years ago.
Turns out he was pioneer of Country Western and Honky Tonk music. His singing and piano playing influenced Hank Williams Sr., Jerry Lee Lewis, and some guy named Elvis something.
Pretty interesting for a guy that most people have forgotten.
Here is an article from Wikipedia,
Aubrey Wilson Mullican (March 29, 1894 – January 1, 1967), known as Moon Mullican, was an American country and western singer, songwriter, and pianist. However, he also sang and played jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and the blues. Indeed, Mullican was one of the main influences on the formation of rock ‘n’ roll, he predated what would be done in rock ‘n’ roll by 20 years. He was associated with the hillbilly boogie style which greatly influenced rockabilly; Jerry Lee Lewis cited him as a major influence on his own singing and piano playing.
Here’s the original,
Here’s Hank Williams Sr’s version from the “Mother’s Best Flour” radio show.
Enjoy.
I just went over to iTunes and listened to a variety of these pieces by different artists. That was fun.
They’re also all dead?
I’d be a little off to say I *remember* Moon Mullican, but I do know exactly who he is. Heard several of his tunes and really liked ’em too. Did you know he was a Texan too?
I did know that, because I read a bit about him. He was influenced by Bob Wills, but I don’t know that he ever played with him. I just thought he was an interesting character, one who has mostly been forgotten.
I just thought he was an interesting character, one who has mostly been forgotten.Indeed. Had it not been for BR5-49’s cover of “Cherokee Boogie” it would have been that much longer before I’d ever heard of him.
