Leona Williams – Amber Digby

5

Since I’ve been listening to Country Music I’ve come to recognize some singers after hearing just a few notes of some of their songs. By no means does this make me a maven (Texas slang for expert), but despite my tin ear I can tell one singer from the other most of the time.

One of my favorite female vocalists has become Leona Williams. However, before I came to admire her voice I started to enjoy the singing of a younger singer named Amber Digby. Quite often I confuse the two because at least to me, they sound a lot alike. I think Digby has a slightly richer voice with a slightly wider vocal range, but again I’m not an expert.

This morning while looking on Amazon.com for a Leona Williams album to add to my to collection, I came to this page. Apparently I’m not the only one who hears a similarity between the two singers.

I don’t think you’ll go wrong buying albums by either singer, but if you don’t have to choose, buy both. You won’t regret it.

And update from my friend Mule Breath, who is having some difficulty getting the comment feature to cooperate,

Leona has done good work over the years. Seeing her as a young, damn good
looking chick plucking on an upright bass twice her size, standing behind
Loretta belting out back-up is my earliest memory. Some of Merle’s best
songs were written by Leona. Her best so far is her latest. Honorary
Texan
, recorded 2 or 3 years ago in the Trevino studio just south of
Austin. Some old stuff, mostly new, all excellent. Not a bad cut on it. And
BTW, Dino, they aren’t called albums anymore.

To which I’ll say, I just downloaded the MP3 version of Honorary Texan and who you calling a dinosaur T-Rex?

I'm a retired paramedic who formerly worked in a largish city in the Northeast corner of the U.S. In my post EMS life I provide Quality Improvement instruction and consulting under contract. I haven't really retired, I just don't work nights, holidays, or weekends.  I escaped the Northeast a couple of years ago and now live in Texas.  I'm more than just a little opinionated, but that comes with having been around the block more than once. You can email me at EMSArtifact@gmail.com After living most of my life (so far) in the northeast my lovely wife and I have moved to central Texas because we weren't comfortable in the northeast any longer. Life is full of twists and turns.

  1. I’ve heard several Leona Williams songs at Willie’s Place on Sirius. Really liked ’em, and what I’ve heard from Amber Digby is good as well. I never knew Leona recorded anything on her own besides the duets she did with former husband Merle Haggard. The things you hear on satellite…at the risk of repeating myself, I’ve gotten my money’s worth several times over.

  2. I never knew she was married to Merle Haggard, but that would explain the album. XM opened a whole new world of music to me, so I have to agree with you.

  3. Oh, and I almost forgot — Leona Williams’ son Ron is signed to the same label she is, and they’re playing some of his songs on Willie’s Place too. He sounds a lot like Keith Whitley; I really like his rendition of ” I Would Have Loved You All Night Long.”

  4. In turn, I forgot to mention that Amber Digby is from your neck of the woods. One of these trips down there she’ll be performing where I am and I’ll get to see her live.

  5. *snerk* Don’t feel bad, TOTWTYTR, I still call ’em albums too and I am barely into my 30s. Speaking of Justin Trevino, I’ve been hearing him on Willie’s Place as well and really like what I’ve heard.
